# what are ai employees?

an ai employee is a software agent packaged as a role rather than a tool. it has a job title, a standing queue of work it picks up without being prompted, memory that survives between tasks, and a monthly cost line. the term is marketing, not a legal category, but the packaging difference from a chatbot is real.

## the packaging is the product

Underneath, an ai employee and a chatbot can be the same model. What differs is everything wrapped around it:

- **A named role** with a fixed scope, tool set, and model, instead of a blank prompt.
- **Standing assignment.** Work arrives from a ticket, a schedule, or a manager. Nobody has to open a chat window.
- **Durable memory.** It starts task fifty knowing what it learned on task one.
- **Permissions.** It can touch specific systems and nothing else.
- **A bill you can attribute.** Cost lands against a role, not against an api key.

Strip any of those and you are back to a chatbot with a nickname, which is most of what ships under this label.

## the vendor pattern, and its ceiling

Nearly every "ai employee" product sells three to eight canned personas: a marketer, a support rep, a bookkeeper, each with a face and a first name. It demos beautifully because a persona is easier to picture than a function call.

The ceiling arrives in week three. Each persona is a solo worker. Ask the marketer for a campaign and it produces one, with no analyst checking the numbers and no reviewer reading it before it goes out. Real work has handoffs, and a roster of independent soloists has none.

## how to evaluate one honestly

Four questions, in order of how much they predict:

1. **What does it remember?** Ask for the mechanism and the limit. "It has memory" without a cap or a place you can read is not an answer.
2. **What can it touch, and who decided?** Permissions should be a settings screen, not a support ticket.
3. **What happens when it is wrong?** There should be a gate before anything irreversible and a way to see what it did.
4. **Can two of them work on the same thing?** If not, you are buying tools with names.

## the naming mess

Ai employee, ai worker, ai teammate, ai staff, digital worker, and ai workforce are all in circulation and largely mean the same thing. The differences are positioning: employee and staff aim at the payroll line, teammate softens it for people who will be working alongside it, worker skews toward operational and physical framings.

I use [ai worker](https://aldena.ai/learn/what-are-ai-workers) and [ai teammate](https://aldena.ai/learn/what-is-an-ai-teammate) as separate pages because the searcher's word tells you what they are worried about, but do not go hunting for a technical distinction. There is not one.

## how this works in aldena

Aldena takes the role packaging seriously and drops the canned-persona part. There are eleven prebuilt [roles](https://aldena.ai/features/agents), including a project manager, an analyst, engineers, and a reviewer, and you staff a [room](https://aldena.ai/features/isolated-rooms) with the ones the work needs.

They are not soloists. An [org chart](https://aldena.ai/features/org-chart) sets who reports to whom, so a manager splits a task and hands pieces down its own line, and you watch it happen rather than scripting it. Each agent carries private [memory](https://aldena.ai/features/agent-memory) of up to 50 entries plus 100 shared per room, and every tool it can reach sits behind a permission with an [approval gate](https://aldena.ai/features/human-in-the-loop) in front of anything irreversible.

- [what is the ai workforce?](https://aldena.ai/learn/what-is-the-ai-workforce): the ai workforce is the set of software agents a company staffs like headcount: named roles, assigned work, a reporting line, and a bill you can attribute.
